ロシアの詩人アンドレイは、通訳のエウジェニアを連れてモスクワからイタリア・トスカーナ地方の田園にやって来る。2人は18世紀のロシアの音楽家パヴェル・サスノフスキーの足跡を追って旅を続けてきた。だが、アンドレイが不治の病に冒されたことで、その旅も終わりを告げようとしている。ある朝、アンドレイは周囲から狂人扱いされているドメニコという男と出会った。やがてドメニコはアンドレイに“ロウソクの火を消さずに広場を渡る”という、自分が成し得なかった願いを託す。それが“世界の救済”に結びつくと言うのだが…。
