1942年ソ連。ドイツ軍はスターリングラードを目指して猛攻を開始する。ソ連軍の将校オガルコフ中尉は、参謀本部に攻撃態勢の再編を行なうよう伝達を命じられたが、ドイツ軍の予想外の進撃の速さに指令を伝えられず、部隊が壊滅してしまう。参謀本部は中尉に責任があるとして銃殺を宣告、独房に収容した中尉の監視をズラバエブ兵卒に命じる。だが、やがて参謀本部も戦場と化し、ズラバエブは中尉を連れて脱出する。
