失業中のスポーツ記者エディはある日、ボクシング界のプロモーター、ニックからトロという選手の売り込みを頼まれた。トロに力量はないが、７フィートもある大男。彼を利用して八百長試合で一儲けしようというのだ。裏工作によって次々と相手を倒すトロの人気は上昇するが、ある試合でトロのパンチを受けた対戦相手が死亡してしまう。トロを食いものにするニックのやり方に憤りを感じたエディは、敢然と立ち向かうことを決意する。

Charley Davis, against the wishes of his mother, becomes a boxer. As he becomes more successful the fighter becomes surrounded by shady characters, including an unethical promoter named Roberts, who tempt the man with a number of vices. Charley finds himself faced with increasingly difficult choices.
