ニューヨークのコロンビア大学で超常現象や幽霊・霊体の研究を行っていたピーター・ヴェンクマン博士ら冴えない研究者3人。ある日、一方的に研究費を打ち切られたことをきっかけに借金に借金を重ね、科学的に超常現象全般を扱い幽霊退治を行う会社「ゴーストバスターズ」を開業。当初は資金もなく依頼もゼロに近かったが、とあるホテルでの幽霊退治をきっかけにビジネスは大当たり、メディアや行政からも注目視される。
