Marnie Ellen Hertzler

Marnie Ellen Hertzler is a video artist, animator, and filmmaker living and working in Baltimore, MD. Her films and animations often explore a multi-media approach to film presentation and distribution and has utilized live performance, installation, and web design to accompany her work. Her films have screened at Locarno Film Festival, Rotterdam International Film Festival, MoMA, and more. In 2018 Marnie was named one of Filmmaker Magazine's 25 New Faces of Independent Film. Influenced by her background in both psychology and fine arts, she creates films that act as cinematic platforms for the exploration of interpersonal relationships, the technology that defines us, and the inevitable end of it all.

At the end of 2020 I drove from Denver, Colorado to Philadelphia, PA with my father Ben. As we drove east, tracing a path that reversed the historical trajectory of westward expansion, we spoke about decolonization, climate change, and what we imagined might be next for our world.

Set Designer
Keith, a small-time drug dealer, is under house arrest at the home of his father in Baltimore. He re-enters a community scarred by unemployment, neglect and deeply entrenched segregation. There, he pushes back against his surrounding limitations as he tries to find a way out of his own internal prison.

Utilizing unconventional animation platforms, and stock photo characters, Growing Girl explores the form and setting of office culture, the reclamation of an empowered female identity, and a remedy for the internalization of an all-too-common social conflict.
Production Design
Across walls, fences, and alleys, rats not only expose our boundaries of separation but make homes in them. "Rat Film" is a feature-length documentary that uses the rat—as well as the humans that love them, live with them, and kill them--to explore the history of Baltimore.
