This suspenseful Italian crime drama is set in a Colombian river town and chronicles the series of events that led up to murder. Based on a novel by distinguished author Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the tale begins in the present as a middle-aged doctor returns to the village after a twenty-year absence to investigate the murder that occurred just before he left.

警官相手に戦い服役中だったランボーは、元上官トラウトマンから特殊任務に就くことを条件に釈放された。特殊任務とは、ベトナム戦争で行方不明になったアメリカ人兵士と捕虜の動向を調査すること。戦闘は一切不要で、情報収集だけの任務だった。ところが捕虜収容所で米兵の拷問を目撃したランボーは、指令に背いて米兵を救出。その後、彼らは国境近くまで逃げ延びるが、米軍のヘリコプターはふたりを見殺しにして去ってしまう。

Sheena's parents are killed while on Safari. She is raised by the mystical witch woman of an African tribe. 限定された状況をきわめて映画的なドラマに作り替える名人、E・スコラの、鮮やかな手並みが鑑賞できる作品である。ムッソリーニ支配下のローマで、アパートの住人全てがファシスト集会に出向いた後に残された主婦と、官憲に追われそこに忍んでいた反ファシストの男の、一日だけの恋を描く。ほとんど密室劇に近い内容だが、アパートの外観の取り入れ方が、ヒッチコックの「裏窓」を思わせて見事である。

巨匠ルキノ・ビスコンティの「山猫」と並ぶ代表作で、ノーベル賞作家トーマス・マンの同名小説を原作に、作曲家グスタフの美少年への心酔と老いの苦しみを描いた。「地獄に堕ちた勇者ども」に続いて撮られた、ドイツ3部作の2作目にあたる。療養のためベネチアにやってきたドイツの老作曲家アシェンバッハは、ホテルで少年タジオを見かける。一目で少年の美しさの虜になり、彼の姿を見つけるだけで喜びを感じ始める。全編に流れるのは、アッシェンバッハのモデルになったマーラーの「交響曲第3、5番」。2011年には製作40周年を記念し、ニュープリント版でリバイバル上映された。
