1976年、オランダの記者ハンスのもとに1本の電話が入る。その話の内容は、アートコレクターとしても知られる大富豪のメンテンが、かつて第2次世界大戦中、ナチスドイツの将校らと結託し、ユダヤ人たちを大量虐殺してその財宝を巻き上げた、という驚くべきものだった。当初は半信半疑だったハンスだが、当時の証人たちを探し出して取材を進めるうち、それが紛れもない真実だと確信し、メンテンを執念深く追い詰めていく。
