ある夜、訓練中のレンジャー隊７名が嵐の密林地帯で消息を絶ち、１７時間後３名の生存者が発見されるが味方同士で撃ち合っていて１名が捜索隊の目の前で殺される。結局、重傷者を含む２名が救助され、いまなお隊長のウエストを含む４名が行方不明のままだった。ジュリー・オズボーン大尉が調査開始するが、救助された兵士は彼女の尋問に黙秘を続けた。オズボーンの上官スタイルズ大佐は、かつてウエストに訓練を受けていた元レンジャー隊員で尋問術に長けた麻薬捜査官トム・ハーディを呼び寄せる。
