昔々の日本。左目を失った少年クボは衰弱した母親と暮らし、母親譲りである魔法の三味線を奏でながら、ハンゾウという侍の物語を村で語って生活費を稼ぐ。盆踊りの夜、母親の妹だという2人の“闇の姉妹”が現われてクボに襲い掛かるが、彼の母親はクボに父親の“刀・よろい・かぶと”を集めろと言い、魔法でクボを遠方に送り出す。旅を始めたクボは、雌のサルや雄のクワガタを仲間にしつつ、“刀・よろい・かぶと”を探す。
