ある日の朝、ノーマとアーサー夫妻の元に、赤いボタン付きの装置が入った箱が届く。夕方、謎めいた男がノーマを訪ね「このボタンを押せば100万ドルを手に入れられるが、代わりに見知らぬ誰かが死ぬ。考える猶予は24時間」と驚くべき提案を持ちかける。二人は迷いながらもボタンを押してしまう。
