1942年ナチス占領下のパリ、ユダヤ人は胸に黄色い星をつけるよう義務付けられ、公園や映画館、遊園地への立ち入りが禁じられていた。それでも11歳のジョーと家族、隣人たちは、ささやかな暮らしは続くと信じていた。同年7月16日、フランス警察によるユダヤ人一斉検挙が始まり、およそ1万3,000人もの人々がヴェル・ディヴ（冬季競輪場）へと送られる。
