2003年10月、当時32歳の小川淳也は第43回衆議院議員選挙に民主党(当時)から初出馬。地盤・看板・カバンなしで選挙戦を戦ったものの落選。2005年に初当選を果たす。無私で真摯(しんし)な姿勢には、リベラルと保守の双方の論客から期待を寄せられた。しかし、党利党益に貢献できないと出世もままならない。2012年からの安倍政権下では我慢の日々が続き、苦悩を抱えながら2017年の衆議院議員総選挙に挑んでいく。
