ローマ、サベリ街の総合病院の小児科病棟。13歳の少女ヴァレンティナ、通称ピッピ(アレッシア・フガルディ)は生後3ヶ月で発病し、てんかんと診断された。小児精神科の若き医師アルトゥーロ(セルジョ・カステリットー)は、それが誤診であり、心の病であることを直観的に見抜く。彼は薬物を使わない心理療法で発作の原因を探ろうとし、ピッピとできるだけ長い時間を過ごすようにする。アルトゥーロはやがて、ピッピの苦しみは、愛のない生活を続ける母チンチア(アンナ・ガリエナ)と父マルチェッロ(アルマンド・デ・ラッツァ)の歪んだ関係を全身で感じ取った彼女が、いつしか自分が逃げ込める世界を作り上げてしまい、心の行き場を失った時に“発作”を起こすのだと確信する。ある日、彼は“スヌーピー”の本をおみやげにピッピを訪ねた。アルトゥーロは、彼が子供の頃に愛した挿話を話し、「かぼちゃ大王が夢をかなえてくれると信じて、かぼちゃ畑に座って大王を待っていた」と語る。この日を境に2人の間に温かい友情が育まれていく。

The lawyer soon discovers that in that area, once target of methane extraction, the soil is now at risk to sink, due to hydrogeological disturbance: in the meanwhile, he also digs out a mystery tied to a death dating back twenty years before.
