2010年8月5日、チリのサンホセ鉱山で落盤事故が起こり、坑道の奥深くに33人の従業員が閉じ込められてしまう。食料の備蓄は3日分しかなく救出活動も難航する中、地下700メートルの避難所ではマリオをリーダーに、従業員たちが少しずつ食料を分け合いながら救援を待ち続ける。次第に生存が絶望視されていく中で17日目、33人の生存を外にいる救出員たちが確認し、大型ドリルを使った救出作戦が決行される。
