Designer Enatsu secretly worries about sexlessness with his wife. Office worker Akane has been trying to return to work in the office while undergoing rehab at home for panic symptoms. Elite advertising agent Ikeyama wants to cut the relationship with his lover. A shabby man named Kurita appears before the three, each with a secret. Enatsu is told by Kurita that he has been having an affair with Enatsu's wife and wants to apologize. Akane accidentally runs over Kurita while driving alone for the first time in a long time. After finishing work, Ikeyama gets a phone call from Kurita saying he has abducted Ikeyama’s lover. But when Ryuta’s girlfriend Yuki gets pregnant, confessions are made that change their relationship.
主人公の玄野計は、地下鉄ホームで小学生時代の親友、加藤勝を見かける。加藤は線路上に落ちた酔っ払いを助けようとするが玄野と共に進入してきた電車に轢かれて死んだはずであったが、次の瞬間、彼らはマンションの一室にいた。そこには、同様に死んだはずの人々が集められていた。部屋の中央にある謎の大きな黒い球「ガンツ」。彼らは「ガンツ」に理由もわからないまま謎の星人を倒すように指示され、別の場所へと転送される。玄野は戦いを生き延びながら成長し「ガンツ」の世界に触れていく。

夫婦二人の船旅の途中、嵐に遭い無人島に漂着した清子。そこにある日、16人の若いフリーターたちが流れ着く。さらには密航に失敗した6人の中国人たちが加わり、若い男23人と清子の共同生活が始まる。いつまで待っても助けの船は来ず、いつしか島を“東京島”と呼ぶようになる中、清子はただ一人の女性として特別視され、したたかに生き抜いていく。月日は流れ、島に定住しようとする男たちに対し、清子は脱出のための行動を開始するが……。

A 17-year-old country boy named Norio decides his only option is to follow his late parents’ example and commit suicide. After failing even at that, his 34-year-old English teacher Akemi convinces him that he should instead move to Tokyo with her and become a lawyer on her dime. Unfortunately, Akemi doesn’t have quite as much money as she leads Norio to believe, and has to secretly get a job at a karaoke bar under the guise of “going to the salon”. Meanwhile, she continuously prods her somewhat dimwitted student to work harder toward her manufactured goal of him becoming a lawyer. Although Norio is falling in love with Akemi, he’s not all that interested in studying, and matters only get worse when he discovers his benefactor’s secret source of income.
