ノルウェー西部の小さな町。ある少年が殺された事件を受け、町の近くを放浪していた米国人青年エリックは容疑者として逮捕される。心理学者クリスティーヌはエリックと面会するが、彼が犯人ではないと考える。アメリカ大使館がエリックの身柄の引き渡しを求める一方、エリックはクリスティーヌを連れて逃亡。ノルウェーをルーツとするエリックは、実は祖先から雷神としての能力を受け継いでおり、次々と事件を起こしてしまい……。

ハロウィンの夜。町外れの幽霊屋敷に入った高校生たちが見つけた本には、数々の怖い話がつづられていた。翌日から本を見つけた仲間が一人ずつ姿を消し、さらに本には毎夜新たな物語が書き加えられていった。主人公は消息不明の高校生たちで、そこには彼らが最も怖いものに襲われる物語が書かれていた。

The film tells the story of two boys who become friends at the start of the Troubles in 1970. The boys share an obsession with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, with the consequence that they run away to Australia.

While Kati's parents are religious and conservative, but argue constantly, Steffi comes from what appears to be a harmonious and liberal family. A difficult night out sparks a traumatic memory for a woman whose way out is to ritualistically harm, then fix herself. Intercutting the two states of the protagonist's psyche, rich golden sweeps from the past begin to bleed into the reds and blues of the film's present.
