1941年。ほぼ1世紀という歴史があり、堅固なとりでとして知られるブレスト要塞だが、ソ連の軍人の間ではナチス・ドイツの襲来が近いのではという噂が流れる。6月21日深夜、ソ連軍になりすましたドイツ軍の工作員たちが列車でブレストの町に到着したのに続いて、翌朝、要塞はドイツ軍の一斉攻撃を受ける。家族が兄しかいない少年兵サーシュカは、自分が好意を抱く少女を救おうと奮闘するが、ソ連軍は劣勢を強いられていた。
