テキサスの片田舎にある古びた一軒屋で狂った一家の引き起こした虐殺から逃れた唯一の女性の通報により、すぐさま警察が出動する。異常な一家の惨劇に興奮して集まった周辺の住民は立てこもる一家に火を投げつけ焼き殺してしまう。住民の暴動からただ一人生き残った忌まわしい一家の一員であった赤ん坊は周辺住民の夫婦に引き取られ、子供として過去の出来事から避けられ育てられていた。大人となったその娘へザーの元にとうの昔に亡くなった祖母の弁護士より、祖母の家の相続の連絡が来る。両親と折り合いの悪かったへザーは両親から離れるチャンスと相続された祖母の家を友人達と訪ねるのだが、訪れたその館には恐るべき住民が潜んでいた。

Five friends return home from a marriage in Canada to the United States. Not far from the border, two customs officers stop them to check their identity.

A rising young attorney successfully defends a man accused of murder, only to have the same type of murder then happen again. Right away the previously defended man hires the attorney again, and although the attorney is quite certain that he is the killer, he agrees to again defend him... much to the consternation of his friends. However, he explains that by being his attorney he will be better able to catch the man in a mistake... and on this the rest of the film develops, with the killer playing a cat and mouse game with the attorney until, at last, they both must recognize that they are not all that different.

Nick Hart is a struggling American artist who lives amongst the expatriate community in 1920s Paris. He spends most of his time drinking and socializing in local café's and pestering gallery owner Libby Valentin to sell his paintings. He becomes involved in a plot by wealthy art patroness Nathalie de Ville to forge three paintings. This leads to several run-ins with American rubber magnate Bertram Stone, who happens to be married to Hart's ex-wife Rachel.

ホテル経営を夢見る父を大黒柱とする不思議な家族の物語が、次男のジョン視点で語られていく。若い頃高級ホテル「アーバスノット・バイ・ザ・シー」でひと夏のアルバイトを経験したベリー家の父ウィンスロー（ウィン）は、ホテルに現れた熊と大道芸人のフロイトと出会う。ヨーロッパに渡るためにフロイトは熊をウィンスローに託すが、熊は誤射によって死んでしまう。その後ニューハンプシャー州デイリーで高校教師を務めるもののホテル経営の夢を抱いていたウィンスローは廃校になった女子高を買い取りそこを「ホテル･ニューハンプシャー」と名付け、家族を巻き込んだホテル経営に乗り出す。
