真面目でしっかり者の女性エマと、自由奔放で恋多き男デクスター。1988年7月15日、スコットランドの大学の卒業式で初めて言葉を交わした2人は、お互いに心惹かれ合いながらも、結局、一線を越えぬまま一夜をともに過ごし、以後、友達同士として付き合う道を選ぶ。そして2人は、ある時は一緒に旅行に出かけたり、各自、恋の悩みを打ち明け合ったり、またある時は大げんかを繰り広げながら毎年の7月15日を過ごしていく。
