ある日、若く優秀な脳外科医クックロウィッツ博士は、裕福な未亡人ビネーブル夫人の邸宅に招待され、ある脳手術を依頼される。患者は、夫人の息子セバスチャンの死を機に発病し、精神病院に入院中の姪キャザリン。夫人は、病院への寄付をちらつかせ、強引に手術を迫る。しかし、キャザリンを診た博士は、彼女に手術が必要とは思えなかった。夫人は、セバスチャンの死に関して、重大な謎を握っているキャザリンの記憶が蘇ることを恐れていたのだった・・・。
