第二次大戦下のパリ。不実の罪の刑罰として前線に送られた、子供と動物をこよなく愛す無垢な男、アベル。すぐ捕虜となるが、その純朴さが上官に気に入られ、幼年学校に雇われる。そして未来のナチス兵士となる少年をスカウトして廻る事に生き甲斐を感じていくのだった。
