On the surface, Saya is a stunning 16-year-old, but that youthful exterior hides the tormented soul of a 400-year-old "halfling". 長年疎遠だった息子が病気で倒れたとの急報を受け、上京した高田剛一。そこで剛一は、息子の余命はあとわずかで、ライフワークにしていた中国の仮面劇の実地調査がもはや続けられないのを本人は心残りにしている、と息子の嫁の理恵から知らされる。かくなる上は、息子に代わって自分が中国に渡り、雲南省の村にいるという名優が演じる仮面劇「単騎、千里を走る。」をカメラに収めて、息子に見せてやろうと剛一は決意する。
