川辺の村に暮らす水生（すいしょう）は、漁に出ていた父を目前で伝説の怪物“水猿”に殺された。村では若い娘をいけにえにし、水猿の災いは収まったかに見えた。だが10年後、川で遊んでいた子どもとその父親が無残にも殺される。村人たちは水猿の再来におびえ、長老は村一番の美しい娘・香蘭（こうらん）をいけにえに差しだそうと提言する。だが彼女に想いを寄せる水生は、父の仇討ちと香蘭を守るため、水猿との戦いを決意する。
