The main character of the film is a veteran of the Armed Forces of the USSR, the general who remained in the ranks, who once traveled from Khalkhin-Gol to Berlin, has the largest awards. A strong and reliable person who has lost his son in a war treats everyone with whom fate brings him with sympathy and understanding. One day he comes to Crimea - to those places where he used to be happy in his youth, to see the house where his family lived. There he meets an elderly woman and her two grandchildren. One of the boys, Nikolay, reminded him of his own son. The friendship begins between an adult and a child, so necessary for each of them.

At the running competition, when it was already clear that Peter Korolev wins, one of the runners embarrassing movement knocks his opponent, the world record holder at long distances Rolf Schmidt. Noticing this, Peter stops and helps Schmidt to his feet. So began their friendship. But sport is sport. And already at the Olympic games in Moscow, Peter Korolev at the finish line bypasses his friend and worthy opponent…

Petr Korolev is a metallurgical engineer and a runner member of the Soviet Union Olympic team. Thanks to his perseverance and willpower, he earned the right to participate in international competitions in athletics.
During his preparation for the Moscow Olympic Games, an unforeseen event during a race caused his rival, a world record holder in long distance running Rolf Schmidt to leave the race. When realizing the accident, Korolev also leaves and helps Schmidt to get up. From that behavior is born his friendship with the rival runner.
Korolev's consecration takes place right at the Olympic Games in Moscow, where he gets the gold medal, beating his world-record friend.

The ten-graders Gosha and Zosya are in love with each other. The last school waltz has been played and it seems nothing stands any longer in the way of the young people being together.
