宗教象徴学者ラングドンは、教皇選挙を控えたバチカンから協力を要請される。かつて自分と険悪だったバチカンからの依頼に戸惑う教授だが、その内容は深刻なものだった。以前、バチカンの弾圧で解体された秘密結社イルミナティが復活し、テロを仕掛けたというのだ。有力枢機卿4人を誘拐した彼らは、1時間ごとにひとりを殺害すると宣言。さらに彼らは欧州原子核研究機構から恐るべき破壊力を持つ《反物質》を盗み出したと言う。
