1899年、パリ。貧しい青年作家クリスチャンはナイトクラブ“ムーラン・ルージュ”に仲間と潜り込むが、一番人気の踊り子で上流階級相手の高級売春婦のサティーンと恋に落ちる。サティーンの機転で、クリスチャンは彼女が主演する新作舞台の台本を書くことになる。一方、資金繰りに困ったムーラン・ルージュのオーナーのジドラーは、資産家ウースター公爵から資金を引き出そうと、サティーンに彼の愛人になるよう強要する。
