Miser Ebenezer Scrooge is awakened on Christmas Eve by spirits who reveal to him his own miserable existence, what opportunities he wasted in his youth, his current cruelties, and the dire fate that awaits him if he does not change his ways. Scrooge is faced with his own story of growing bitterness and meanness, and must decide what his own future will hold: death or redemption.

片田舎の聾唖学校に赴任してきた男性教師が、心までも閉ざした美しい女性との触れ合いの中で、教師として成長してゆく感動のラヴ・ストーリー。実際に聾唖者であるマーリー・マトリンは本作でアカデミー賞主演女優賞を受賞。

世話好きの未亡人ドーリーは金持ちだが口やかましい男やもめホレスと帽子屋アイリーンの仲を取り持とうと奔走するが、そのうちドーリー自身も彼を好きになってしまい、ついには自分を売り込んでしまう。
