いつも屋根裏部屋でひとりで絵を描いて遊んでいる少年イカールは、ママと二人暮らし。パパが“若い雌鳥（女性）”のもとに去ってしまってから、ママはビールを飲んでは怒ってばかり。ある日、いつものようにビールの缶でタワーを作って遊んでいる時、ママは不慮の事故に遭い、帰らぬ人になってしまう。事故を担当した警察官のレイモンは、ママがつけた“ズッキーニ”という愛称を大切にしているイカールを不憫に思いながらも、孤児院「フォンテーヌ園」に連れていく…。
