副保安官ジョー・"ディーク"・ディーコンは、ジム・バクスター巡査部長と協力して、ロサンゼルスを恐怖に陥れている連続殺人犯を捜索する。犯人を追ううちに、バクスターは、捜査がディークの過去の記憶を呼び起こし、事件以上に脅威となる不穏な秘密を明らかにしていることに気づかない。

ハロウィンの夜、白いマスクをかぶった少年マイケル・マイヤーズ（ダエグ・フェアーク）は、姉のほか3人を惨殺。精神病院でルーミス医師（マルコム・マクダウェル）の治療を受けることになる。しかし、17年後のハロウィンの日、病院を脱出したマイケルは再び白いマスクを手に取り、恐怖の殺人鬼と化す。
