質・古着商の長男として、岩手県に生まれたケンジ。だが、実家に馴染めず、父との間に葛藤が生じていき、家を飛び出し上京する。やがて、故郷に帰ってきたケンジは、農学校の教師として、生徒の育成にあたる。彼の授業は一風変わっており、教科書を閉じて授業を行う等、型破りなものだったが、生徒達からは慕われていた。しかし、そんな生活も長くは続かず、教壇を去り、貧しく、冷害に苦しむ農民のための研究を始める。そのかたわら、文才に恵まれたケンジは、多くの詩や童話の創作に励んでいく。そんな彼の唯一の理解者が妹・トシであった。しかし、最愛の妹との別離がケンジを待ち受けていた…。
