When a school bus accident devastates an inner city Los Angeles neighborhood, it will forever change the paths for all. Friendships will be challenged, beliefs questioned and it become a time when they must choose which way to fall.

A sailor prone to violent outbursts is sent to a naval psychiatrist for help. Refusing at first to open up, the young man eventually breaks down and reveals a horrific childhood. Through the guidance of his doctor, he confronts his painful past and begins a quest to find the family he never knew.

1995年、デトロイト。中産階級の白人が多く住む郊外とは“8マイルロード”で分断され、貧困層が多数を占める都市中心部。ジミーはここで無職の母と幼い妹の3人でトレイラー・ハウスに暮らしていた。彼は昼間プレス工場で働き、夜はヒップホップ・クラブ“シェルター”で毎週行われるラップ・バトルでの優勝を目指し、プロで成功することを夢見ていた。だが、彼は才能がありながらその実力を発揮出来ないでいる。加えて母ステファニーとの確執に悩んでいたジミーはある日、モデルを夢見るウェイトレスのアレックスと出会い恋に落ちるのだが…。
