1914年、内戦下の中国では、極悪非道な北洋軍閥が各地で虐殺と略奪を繰り返し、戦乱を逃れてやむなく郷里を後にする難民が大量に発生。石頭村で教師をしていたパク・レンも、生徒の子どもたちを連れて命からがら村を逃げ出し、近隣の普城へと向かう。普城では、ヨン・ハックナンが自警団を結成して村の平和を堅持していたが、やがてそこへ、軍閥を率いる将軍の息子チョウ・シウロンたちが押し寄せ、絶体絶命の危機が迫る。
