In the center of the plot children's writer Valentin Shubin, accustomed to live in seclusion. His books about the elephant Mishka, written in his youth, enjoyed great success both at home and abroad. A series of random events causes a new surge of interest in the personality and creativity of the writer-introvert. 1985年、旧ソ連初の宇宙ステーション、サリュート7と地球との交信が突如途絶えて、サリュート7は漂流を始め、このままでは地球に墜落する恐れも生じる非常事態に。やむなくソ連政府は、宇宙船を新たに打ち上げてサリュート7と手動でドッキングさせ、その原因究明と修復作業に当たることを決断。かくして、熟練の技師ヴィクトルと既に退役していたパイロットのウラジーミルの2人が、この決死のミッションに挑むこととなる。
