限定された状況をきわめて映画的なドラマに作り替える名人、E・スコラの、鮮やかな手並みが鑑賞できる作品である。ムッソリーニ支配下のローマで、アパートの住人全てがファシスト集会に出向いた後に残された主婦と、官憲に追われそこに忍んでいた反ファシストの男の、一日だけの恋を描く。ほとんど密室劇に近い内容だが、アパートの外観の取り入れ方が、ヒッチコックの「裏窓」を思わせて見事である。
