1636年12月14日。大国・清の軍勢が朝鮮に侵攻し、丙子の役が勃発。約12万もの清の大軍に攻撃され、朝鮮王・仁祖と朝廷の役人たちは南漢山城に隠れるが、敵兵に囲まれて孤立してしまう。平和を重んじ、国と民を守るために清と和睦交渉を図るべきだと考える吏曹大臣チェ・ミョンギルと、清と戦い大義を守るべきだと考える礼曹大臣キム・サンホンは対立し、彼らに挟まれる形で、仁祖の葛藤は深くなるばかりだった。
