１２世紀末。ヘンリー２世と、ベケットは学生時代から親交があり心を許しあった仲だった。２人の親交が深くなっていくにつれて、宮廷にも教会にも2人の間柄を快く思わぬ者があらわれた。だが、ヘンリーは気にとめず、大法官の職を復活させベケットを任じた。そのことを苦々しく思う司教フォリオーは、ローマ法王庁に中傷させようとカンタベリーの大司教に迫ったが、大司教はベケットの人物を見抜いていてそれを拒否した。ヘンリーとベケットは相変わらず親交を続けていたが、ベケットが人間として成長してくると、ヘンリーとの間に心の溝がうまれるようになった。
