Bernard-Henri Lévy is a French public intellectual. Often referred to in France simply as BHL, he was one of the leaders of the "Nouveaux Philosophes" movement in 1976. In 2015, The Boston Globe has said that he is "perhaps the most prominent intellectual in France today".

The day after the Russian invasion, we shot a film, "Why Ukraine", documenting the first months of the Ukrainian ordeal and broadcast on ARTE. This new film takes up where the other one left off. It is a diary kept in the second half of the year 2022 and where everything has been recorded: small and large events, hazards, emotions, testimonies of living people and mourning, chronicle of the front and bombed cities, portraits. The film begins in Kharkiv, in the Donbass. It ends in Kherson, the day after the liberation of the city, and then in Ochakiv, the base from which the elite units fighting the last battle of the Ukraine against the Russian occupation and its devastation will perhaps leave. All in all, the true story of a war without equivalent for three quarters of a century and of which we have tried to be the committed but lucid witnesses.

Sarajevo on 28 of June, 2014. At the Hotel Europa, the best hotel in town, the manager Omer prepares to welcome a delegation of diplomatic VIPs. On the centenary of the assassination that is considered to have led to World War I, an appeal for peace and understanding is supposed to start from here. But the hotel staff have other worries: having not been paid for months, they are planning to go on strike. Hatidza from the hotel laundry is elected strike leader even though her daughter Lamija, who works in reception, is firmly against industrial action. Meanwhile, in the sealed-off presidential suite, a guest from France rehearses a speech. Elsewhere, a television reporter conducts interviews about war and its consequences. Was Gavrilo Princip, the 1914 assassin, a criminal or a national hero? What long shadow does his deed cast into the present?

They refuse to be seen as victims, even though the filmmakers portray them so. Also included are the origins and political aspects of the war. It offers interviews with participants. Salomé Lerner just finished writing an autobiography. She goes to a TV show called "Apostrophes", hosted by French TV showman Bernard Pivot. Pivot then imagines a film that could be created from her gripping story. A film entirely made of music because after seeing the young pianist Erik Berchot, Salomé believes seeing her long lost brother, who was a musician as well. A brother she had lost along with her parents in 1943. However, the Lerners did in fact escape the gestapo and might have based themselves in Paris...
