第二次世界大戦前夜の1938年、リーゼルは弟に先立たれ、ミュンヘン近郊の田舎町へ里子に出されて母と別々に暮らすことになる。里親のハンスはリーゼルが「墓掘り人の手引き」という奇妙な本を肌身離さず持っていることから、彼女が字を読めないことに気が付き、本を読み聞かせるようになる。そして、リーゼルは読み書きを学び、たくさんの本を通じて知識だけでなく、勇気と希望を与えられるのだった。 しかし、折りしもドイツはナチスによって自由を奪われ、本を読むことすら禁じられる。ある日リーゼルは、反ユダヤ主義の暴動が激化する広場で焼かれた大量の本の中から、焼け残った1冊の本をこっそりと持ち帰るのだが・・・。

In the middle of century XII much of the European territory is ruled by the Holy Roman Empire and violence and cruelty are the order of the day. Several German regions are terrorized by a dangerous murderer who is dedicated to kill young girls. Therefore, Isanhart and Laurin, his faithful companion in arms, will travel from end to end of the old continent to hunt the ruthless criminal.

Hanna and Simon are in a 20 year marriage with an unexciting relationship. By chance, they both meet and start separate affairs with Adam. A nudist site in eastern Germany is sold to Dieter Lohe, a conservative textile manufacturer from Bavaria. He visits his new property with his daughter Natalie, and plans to use the property as a hunting ground.

What To Do In Case of Fire? tells the humorous and touching story of six former creative anarchists who lived as house squatters in Berlin during its heyday in the 80s when Berlin was still an island in the middle of the former eastern Germany. At the end of the 80s they went their separate ways with the exception of Tim and Hotte, who have remained true to their ideals and continue to fight the issues they did as a group. In 2000, with Berlin as Germany's new capital, an event happens forcing the group out of existential reason to reunite and, ultimately, come to grips with the reason they separated 12 years ago.
