Middle-aged farmer Noda Masao (Daichi Yasuo) is a good, honest man, but his attempts for marriage have all met with failure. When they decide to get married, Masao borrows money from his Agricultural Association and travels to the Philippines for the wedding - only to discover that it was all a scam. Stranded in Manila with no money, Masao ends up staying to work. One day he meets a beautiful farmer's daughter, Christina (Alice Dixson), reawakening not only his chances for love, but also his love for farming.

ホームレスの集落を訪れた失業中の中年男・陽介は、そこで人生の師と仰ぐ老人・タロウの死に直面する。生前、タロウから「盗んだ金の仏像を、能登半島の日本海に面した赤い橋のたもとの家に隠した」と聞いていた陽介は、富山湾沿いの赤い橋のある土地を訪れた。そこで陽介は、たもとの家に住むサエコと出会うが、彼女の体には不思議な現象が起きていた。体内に水がたまると悪いことがしたくなり、快感と共に水を放出するというのだ。

Satsuki and Takuya are high school students who meet at kendo practice, where they bash one another with wooden swords. They begin an awkward romance, but Takuya soon reveals a masochistic side to his desires. He has been stealing Satsuki's soiled clothing and secretly surveilling her while imagining her subjugation of him. Disgusted, Satsuki rejects him but he persists, and she discovers her own pleasure in manipulating and humiliating him.

A special agent of the Tokyo Police has been given the assignment of assassinating a group of crime bosses. Soon afterwards, she encounters the hitman the crime bosses have sent to kill her. After talking together, they discover that they are equally reluctant to carry out their assignments. They are pushed onward by their respective bosses, however, until they must both decide where their loyalties truly lie.

深沢七郎の同名小説の、木下恵介監督作品に次ぐ2度目の映画化。今村昌平監督が、因習により山に捨てられる老婆と、その息子の心の葛藤を描いた人間ドラマ。1983年のカンヌ国際映画祭グランプリ受賞。信州の山深い寒村。いまだ元気に働くおりんだったが、今年、楢山まいりを迎えようとしていた。それは、70歳の冬に皆、息子に背負われ楢山へ捨て置かれるという村の掟のこと。神に召されると喜ぶおりんに対し、息子・辰平は気持ちの整理がつかない……。
