戦国の世、丹波の国で謀反が起こった。前主を弑して新しく領主の座にのぼった左馬之助は、過酷な労役を領民に課し、さらには村の守り神たる魔神像をも破壊しようとした。だが、額にくいを打ち込んだ途端、突如として山崩れが起こり、作業にあたっていた人足たちは土砂に呑み込まれてしまう。左馬之助は魔神像の破壊をあきらめたが、前主の係累に対する追及はやめなかった。ついに遺子・忠文を捕らえた彼は、忠臣とともに磔刑に処することを決定する。忠文の妹・小笹は、唯一の心の拠り所、魔神像に助けを求めるのだったが……。映像化を考慮しないで作られたかのような演出に、特撮が見事に応えた傑作作品。４．５メートルという難しいスケールに設定された魔神像は、巧みな特殊撮影によって動き回り、素晴らしいリアリティを醸し出している。

牛若丸は常盤御前の犠牲によって生き残り、鞍馬の山で新田ノ太郎吉光の監視の下に置かれていた。吉光の娘桔梗とは唯一の仲のよい遊び友達であった。一夜源氏再興を企てる金王丸、正近、信時、四郎丸の源氏四天王から、父頼朝の死や母常盤の身の上をきかされ、母に会いたさ一心で武芸にはげんだ。そして、遂に常盤の侍女なぎさの手引で母を訪ねたが、その母は、「母と呼ばれる覚えはない」と牛若を冷く追いかえした。その帰途五条の橋で弁慶に斬ってかかられたが、これをさんざんにあしらって参らせた。
