幼いころに祖母が失踪するのを止められなかったゆみ子は、25歳になり、祖母の生まれ変わりだと感じた郁夫と結婚する。だがある夜、郁夫は列車に飛び込んで自殺してしまう。5年後、ゆみ子は郁夫との間に生まれた息子を連れ、奥能登の村に住んでいる民雄と再婚し、人生を再出発させようとするが、郁夫のことをまだなかなか忘れられずにいた。やがてゆみ子は家出をしようと決意するが、それでもまだ郁夫のことを忘れられなかった。
