Struggling scriptwriter Gota Yanagida and his wife Chika have been married for ten years and live with their daughter Aki. Gota suffers in his sexless marriage and tries to make his wife happy every day, but Chika is cold to him because he earns no money. One day, Gota is approached by a film producer about his story of “a high school girl who makes udon noodles at a tremendous speed.” He needs to go to Kagawa to write the screenplay and proposes a family trip there, and Chika reluctantly joins. However, a different film project has already been decided.

都会の片隅の今にも壊れそうなボロ家でひっそりと暮らす、治と妻の信代、息子の祥太、治の老母・初枝、そして信代の妹・亜紀の奇妙な5人家族。彼らは、家族ぐるみで店で万引きを働いたり、初枝が定期的にもらう年金を頼りに、どうにか毎日を送っていた。ある冬の晩、近所の団地の外で震える幼い女の子ゆりを見るに見かねた治が、彼女を家に連れ帰り、家族に新しい仲間が加わる。そんな彼ら一家は、実はある秘密を抱えていた。

人気作家の衣笠幸夫は、夏子と長年結婚していたが、既に2人の仲は冷え切った関係。ある日、夏子はスキー旅行に出発するが、バスが事故を起こして彼女は急死。その留守中、若い愛人と密会していた幸夫は、妻の死をどう受け止めるべきか、なかなか分からずにいた。一方、同じバスの事故でやはり妻を亡くした陽一は、悲嘆に暮れ、感情をあらわにする。仕事で多忙な陽一に代わって、幸夫は彼の子どもたちの面倒を見ることを約束する。

大学八年生の竹村文哉（オダギリジョー）は、いつの間にか84万円の借金をこしらえていた。返済期限の前日、文哉は借金取りの福原（三浦友和）から、一つの提案を受ける。吉祥寺から霞ヶ関まで歩く福原の東京散歩に付き合えば、借金をチャラにするばかりか、100万円の報酬もくれるというのだ。選択の余地のない文哉はそれを引き受け、井の頭公園の橋の上から、二人の散歩は始まる。初日の調布飛行場で、福原は妻（宮田早苗）を殺してしまい、桜田門の警視庁に自首しに行くための散歩であることを文哉に告げる。一方、福原の妻が勤めていたスーパーでは、彼女の無断欠勤を部長の国松（岩松了）や事務員の仙台（ふせえり）、友部（松重豊）が心配していた。その頃も福原と文哉の散歩は淡々と続いていた。阿佐ヶ谷、新宿などを経て、やがて散歩も四日目を迎えた頃、二人は福原の知り合いである麻紀子（小泉今日子）の家を訪れる。そこに娘役のふふみ（吉高由里子）も加え、擬似家族のような数日を過ごす四人。家族に縁がなく育った文哉の心に、今まで味わったことのない感情がざわついた。まもなく、福原が最後の晩餐に食べたいと言っていたカレーライスが食卓に上がる。その翌日、福原と文哉は霞ヶ関へと足を進め、福原はふっと警察へと入って消える。取り残された文哉は、秋の東京に一人立ちすくむのだった。

Kaoru, a wealthy woman whose youth is fading, abandons the hustle and bustle of the city to live a peaceful life in a house on the coast. There she takes care of an old deaf, dumb and blind man as if he were an insect, a child or a pet. He can’t do anything for himself, so she feeds him and accompanies him on his walks. This strong mutual dependency offers Kaoru an escape from society and allows her to free herself from restrictions imposed by common sense.

Keiko, a young, newly hired weather woman, is eager to give her channel's flagging ratings a boost. She decides a panty shot might do the trick, so during her forecast she lifts her skirt, thereby capturing the attention and the hearts of viewers. Keiko's stunt creates such a stir of excitement over the weather report that viewers begin religiously turning in to see what she'll do next. However, this showboating routine earns the ire of Kaori, the beautiful and ambitious daughter of JTV's chairman. Jealous of her success and aching to take over the weather report, Kaori is willing to do just about anything to get what she wants.

Keiko is the new owner of a local television station, and she's determined to succeed, no matter what! But the rival TV station will stop at nothing to crush her, and one by one, Keiko's new programs are humiliatingly sabotaged. When the weather woman falls victim to an underhanded trick, Keiko decides that she's through being nice. While filling in for the stricken reporter, she flashes her underwear, making her weather forecast an instant hit! What follows is an outrageously sexy contest - which judges skimpy costumes and arm wrestling instead of beauty and talent - to determine who will be the reigning weather woman!
