現代のロンドン。12歳の少年クインは、母が働く地下鉄工事現場に立ち寄った時、そこで永い眠りから覚めた巨大竜“サラマンダー”の姿を目撃する。その後、驚異的な早さで世界中に繁殖したサラマンダーは、人間を喰らい、炎を吐いて何もかも焼き尽くし、人類を滅亡の危機に陥れる。わずかに生き残った人々は都市を捨て荒野に要塞を築き身を潜めて暮らすしかなかった。あれから20年、要塞で仲間と共に飢えと恐怖に苦しむ日々を過ごしていたクインのもとに、ヴァンザン率いるアメリカの義勇軍が現われ、一緒にサラマンダーと対決するよう迫るのだが…。
