During the 1880's a young swordsman, Saotome Gengo, on his way to Tokyo stops at an inn in a small town. But he does not know that his prowess has already attracted envious attention and that Senzo, the boss of the local gang, plans to have him killed. Seiji, the disowned son of the innkeeper, has run up a big gambling bill and, to settle it, the hoodlums decide to kill him. He is saved, however, by Hanako, star of the dancing troupe also staying at the inn. Gengo meets Hanako and learns that the troupe cannot open their show because the local police corruptly demand too much of the receipts. After another fight, Gengo sees the police-chief on behalf of the troupe, but is refused. So he suspects that the police and the hoodlums are implicated with each other. There seems no way to open the show until they hear that the governor is coming to the town for a local banquet. They appeal to him and he promises to investigate. It is decided that a duel will settle the matter...

Two friends, both members of a Japanese cargo boat, return to Japan after a three-month voyage and have just 24 hours shore leave. In those hectic hours, they vie for the affections of a hotel owner's daughter but wind up with separate girl friends and attempt to bring together the parents of a baby who have separated.

The film is set in Fukagawa in the early Showa period and depicts a fateful confrontation between two men who rise and fall in a black stream, trying to live a real human life, violating the cruel laws of the passing generation.

Every day a car accident happens in the city. The involved parties are prey to the settlement agents (jidanya), mediators between the parts and the insurance companies to avoid time-consuming legal actions that could come when no settlement is reached (while cheating both parties out of some piece of the settlement pay). Genkichi is a well versed old-timer, that sees how his freshly out of collage son struggles to fit into the business, while at the same time facing one of his lowest rivals in a car crash incident.

深夜の映画館で常番の老人が殺された。河上刑事は、折しも危篤状態を脱した一人息子を病院に見舞い、つきっきりで看病している妻をいたわっていたところだが、署からの急報で現場へ急行した。瀕死の老人の口から「マツウラ」の言葉を聞いた河上刑事は映写技師見習の松浦進を指名手配した。捜査が進むにつれ、松浦には林田恵美子という女がいることが判った。河上刑事はアパートに恵美子を訪ねた。彼女は語った－－進さんの母は若いころ男の人に捨てられたんです。それ以来、進さんは世をひがんで生きるようになったんです－－河上刑事は、その言葉に強くうたれた。数日後、恵美子のアパートに進が忍んできたが、一目逢うなり進は非常線をくぐって逃げ去った。その夜、妻子のいない家に戻ってきた河上刑事のもとへ一人の男がふみ込んできた。それは進だった。－－あんたは俺の親父なんだ－－蒼白になった河上刑事に、進は、明日九時二十分の新潟行列車に乗って逃げるから一緒に来いと恵美子に報せてくれと頼んだ。翌朝、上野駅に河上刑事が現れた。彼は進と恵美子が来るはずの列車に乗りこんだ。何両目かのドアをあけた河上刑事は進を見つけた。彼は懐から辞職願を取出し、進に云った。－－お前は私の息子だ、私も一緒に責任をとろう－－進の顔が泣き笑いのように歪んだ。次の駅で父と子は列車を降りた。
