1980年、ハワイ沖を航行する原子力攻撃空母ニミッツは突如、奇妙な竜巻の襲来を受けたために真珠湾へ引き返そうとするが、そのまま呑み込まれてしまう。嵐は収まったものの、随伴していた駆逐艦が行方不明で無線にどこからも応答がないなどの異常な事態を認識した艦長は、両舷に緊急警戒態勢を発令すると共に、真珠湾への偵察機を発進させる。ニミッツに近づく飛行機をレーダーによって発見し、調査のためにF-14トムキャットを発進させるが、その飛行機はなんと零戦であった。
