原潜USSモンタナは深海で何かに当たって座礁し、連絡が途絶える。海軍大尉コフィは捜索のため、海底油田基地ディープコアに、同基地の設計者であるリンジーとともに乗り込む。基地ではリンジーの夫バッドも働いていたが、夫妻の仲は冷え切っていた。見つかった原潜に生存者はいないが、リンジーはそこで奇妙な生命体を目撃。やがて嵐のせいで海上の基地とディープコアを結ぶケーブルが切れ、同基地の面々の生命に危機が迫る。
