新米教師の岡野（高良健吾）は、ひたむきだが優柔不断で、問題があっても目を背け、子供たちから信用されていない。雅美（尾野真千子）は夫の単身赴任で3歳の娘と2人で生活し、娘に暴力を振るってしまうことがあった。一人暮らしの老人あきこ（喜多道枝）はスーパーで支払いを忘れ、認知症を心配するようになる。彼らは同じ町で暮らしており……。

仕事を辞めて何もせずに生活していた達夫は、パチンコ屋で気が荒いもののフレンドリーな青年、拓児と出会う。拓児の住むバラックには、寝たきりの父親、かいがいしく世話をする母親、そして姉の千夏がいた。達夫と千夏は互いに思い合うようになり、ついに二人は結ばれる。ところがある日、達夫は千夏の衝撃的な事実を知る。
