A young girl named Tomoko visits the Hiroshima Peace Memorial. There she has a mysterious meeting with Sadako, the little girl who was 2 years old when the U.S. dropped the bomb on her city during WWII and 11 when she died from the effects of radiation poisoning. Sadako takes Tomoko on an eye-opening journey.

昭和15年。東京本所区（現・墨田区）に住む八才のかよ子は、五代続いた釣竿店の娘で、働き者の両親と、三人の兄、祖母の愛情に包まれて、明るく健やかに育っていた。昭和16年、弟の誕生に姉である喜びを実感するかよ子だったが、12月8日、日本は太平洋戦争に突入し、町には出征兵士を見送る光景が見られるようになる。昭和19年6月、Ｂ29爆撃機の来襲が頻繁になり、かよ子はたった一人で沼津の伯母の所へ縁故疎開することになる。そして、昭和20年3月9日の夜、沼津で箱根の山脈ごしに真っ赤に燃える東京の空を見るかよ子は、この大空襲で父も母も兄二人と弟、祖母の家族六人が死んだことを、唯一生き残った兄・喜三郎から聞かされるのだった。そんな絶望の中で敗戦を迎え、親せきの家を転々としたかよ子は、本所の焼け跡で思い出の品の残骸を拾い、かつてこの辺りで「うしろの正面だあれ」と歌って遊んだ友達や家族のことを想い、泣き続けた。そんな時、ふっと「かよ子は明るく人に好かれる子だからだいじょうぶ。自信をもたなきゃね」と、いつも励ましてくれた母親の言葉がよみがえってくる。そして、この言葉をかみしめながら、死んだ家族のためにも生き抜こうと決心したかよ子は、明日に向かって一歩一歩踏みしめ、歩きだすのだった。

The year is 1945. Everything as usual in the Fukuoka city. Some places in Japan have already been scorched by the fire of war, but here it is relatively peaceful and calm. The school still working, and the boys play war in their spare time. Daichi and his friend are the commanders of rival squads. One day a newcomer appears in the class - Yoriko, a girl evacuated from Tokyo. Yoriko takes life very seriously, she has good reasons - her childhood ended after the loss of loved ones in the bombing. Children get to know each other and become friends. They, as the rest of the city, do not yet know that on June 19 their life will be divided into "before" and "after".
