危うく処分されかけた小さな子ブタは、エラブル家の娘ファーンに引き取られ、ウィルバーと名付けられる。やがて、ウィルバーは向かいの農場に預けられ、他の動物たちと一緒に暮らし始める。だがそんなある日、ウィルバーは、春に生まれたブタはクリスマスのハムになる、という話を聞いてしまう。怯えるウィルバーの前に、賢く心優しいクモのシャーロットが現われ、「あなたを守ってあげる」と約束する。
