With his first Dogma-95 film director Lars von Trier opens up a completely new film platform. With a mix of home-video and documentary styles the film tells the story of a group of young people who have decided to get to know their “inner-idiots” and thus not only facing and breaking their outer appearance but also their inner.

Stig is a 15-year-old pupil of 37-year-old teacher Viola. He is attracted by her beauty and maturity while she is drawn to him by his youth and innocence, a godsent relief from her drunk and miserable husband.

It is time for the written examination. Everybody is waiting for the exact time to come where they can turn the paper and start the examination. All the tables are placed in lines in the assembly hall. Not a sound is being made and the atmosphere bears the marks of excitement, anticipation and nervousness.
